The opening of the Algiers-African University Theatre Festival in Algiers

Tripoli, July 13, 2026 (LANA) – Libya, represented by the University of Tripoli, participated today, Monday, in the opening of the first edition of the Algiers African University Theatre Festival. The festival, held at the Algerian National Theatre "Mahieddine Bachtarzi" in Algiers, features the participation of universities and delegations representing 16 African countries.
The festival was inaugurated by the Algerian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Badari, in the presence of several Algerian officials, accredited ambassadors, university and institute directors, as well as the participating delegations and students. The festival runs until July 20.
The first edition of the festival is being held under the slogan "Africa Meets on the University Stage" and includes theatrical performances both within and outside the official competition, in addition to street theatre performances, with the participation of universities and academic institutions from various African countries.
The festival program also includes an African university competition for the best play script, as well as an international symposium on African theater organized by the University of Algiers 2, entitled "African Theatrical Practice: Stage Experiences and Prospects for Academic Development."
The festival aims to promote cultural and artistic exchange among African university students, encourage theatrical creativity, strengthen academic and cultural cooperation between higher education institutions on the African continent, and provide opportunities for networking and exchanging experiences among creative young people.
