The Presidential Council welcomes the Sirte meeting and affirms that strengthening military dialogue is important for the stability and security of the country

Tripoli, July 12, 2026 (LANA) – The Presidential Council, the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army, welcomed the convening of the Joint Military Commission (5+5) meeting, attended by the Acting Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Salah al-Din al-Namroush, and the Chief of Staff of the General Command, Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, with the participation of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), members of the Joint Military Commission, and a number of military leaders.

In a statement issued today, the Council said that this meeting is an important step reflecting the continuation of national efforts aimed at strengthening military dialogue and building upon the understandings and mutual trust achieved, thus advancing the process of unifying the Libyan military institution.

The Council affirmed in its statement that this process represents an extension of the national efforts exerted by military leaders over the past years, which have contributed to consolidating communication channels and strengthening trust among the various military components, thus providing a solid foundation for completing the project of unifying the military institution within the framework of legitimacy and national institutions.

The Presidential Council reiterated that unifying the military institution is a national priority and a fundamental pillar for completing the unification of state institutions, consolidating security and stability, and creating the conditions for fulfilling national obligations, all in service of Libya's unity and sovereignty.

The statement emphasized that any security or military arrangements or understandings must be conducted within the framework of legitimacy, enhancing the professionalism and unity of the military institution, and reinforcing its subordination to the legitimate authority of the state in accordance with applicable legislation.

The statement affirmed the Presidential Council's continued commitment to this national process and its support for its outcomes. It called upon all military leaders and institutions to continue dialogue and coordination in a spirit of national responsibility, prioritizing the supreme interest of the nation, thereby contributing to the completion of the military unification project and strengthening Libya's security and stability.
