The Speaker of Parliament confirms that Al-Aib will continue in his role as head of the intelligence service

Pulbished on:

Benghazi, July 8, 2026 (LANA) – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Counselor Aguila Saleh, affirmed that Lieutenant General Hussein Mohammed Al-Aib will continue to perform his duties and responsibilities as head of the Libyan Intelligence Service, exercising the powers legally vested in him, in accordance with the applicable legislation governing the agency's operations.

In a letter addressed to Al-Aib, the Speaker explained that this affirmation is based on the provisions of the Constitutional Declaration and its amendments, the Libyan Political Agreement, and the provisions of Law No. (8) of 2023 concerning the reorganization of the Libyan Intelligence Service. It also reflects a commitment to upholding constitutional and legal legitimacy, maintaining the stability of state institutions, and ensuring the smooth functioning of public services.

He emphasized the necessity for the Libyan Intelligence Service to continue performing its national duties, managing and overseeing its branches and units, and taking the necessary measures to safeguard its headquarters, documents, information, assets, and equipment, protecting them from any attack, seizure, or unlawful use.

He stated that the political agreement stipulated that decisions regarding the appointment of the head of the intelligence service must be submitted to the House of Representatives for ratification, either acceptance or rejection, as this is a necessary constitutional procedure for their implementation.

He emphasized the necessity of taking legal action against anyone found to be in violation of the law, in addition to strengthening cooperation and coordination between the service and all state institutions, as well as regional and international partners, to ensure it fulfills its duties and responsibilities.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives requested the head of the Libyan intelligence service to provide the Speaker's office with periodic reports on the progress of work within the service and the measures taken within its legal jurisdiction, and to inform the Speaker of any developments, obstacles, or exceptional circumstances that might affect the performance of its duties.

He called upon the head of the service and all its members to adhere to the provisions of the constitution and the law, to maintain the unity, discipline, and independence of the institution, and to avoid anything that might affect its performance or hinder it from carrying out its national duties.

The Presidential Council had decided at the end of June to relieve Hussein Mohammed Al-Aib of his duties as head of the General Intelligence Service and appoint Abdulmajid Ibrahim Abdulkarim as his replacement.
