Orlando: Libya is a key partner in the EU's efforts in the Mediterranean

Tripoli, July 8, 2026 (LANA) – The Head of the European Union Delegation to Libya, Nicola Orlando, affirmed that Libya is a key partner in the EU's efforts to promote effective and human rights-based management of the Mediterranean.

This came in a tweet posted by the European official following his meeting on Tuesday with the Head of the Libyan Coast Guard, Major General Reda Issa, in Tripoli.

Orlando explained that he reviewed the existing partnership between the two sides with the Head of the Libyan Coast Guard, reiterating the EU's continued support for strengthening the Coast Guard's capabilities, particularly in search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.

He added that the discussions addressed ways to develop joint cooperation by enhancing training programs, strengthening international maritime cooperation, and consolidating human rights standards in various areas of work, in partnership with relevant stakeholders.

The Head of the EU Delegation indicated that the meeting comes within the framework of ongoing coordination between the two sides, contributing to supporting joint cooperation and strengthening institutional capacities in maritime fields, according to the tweet he posted on his official account.
