Tripoli, June 29, 2026 (LANA) – The Presidential Council has decided to relieve Hussein Mohammed Al-Aib of his duties as head of the General Intelligence Service and appoint Abdulmajid Ibrahim Abdulkarim as the new head of the Libyan Intelligence Service.

In another decision, the Presidential Council appointed Abdulshafi Hussein Mohammed as Deputy Head of the Intelligence Service for Public Affairs and External Communication, according to a statement issued by the Council's media office on Monday.

The Presidential Council stated that these decisions are effective from the date of their issuance, and that any conflicting provisions are hereby repealed. The relevant authorities are required to implement these decisions.

The Presidential Council announced its unanimous approval of the decisions on its agenda after discussing them in a meeting held on Sunday. Council member Musa Al-Koni was absent from the meeting due to his presence abroad.

In a statement, the Council said it discussed the items on its agenda and unanimously approved the decisions, based on its national responsibility and commitment to exercising its constitutional and sovereign powers in a manner that serves the best interests of the state.

For his part, Council member Musa al-Koni denied his absence from yesterday's Presidential Council meeting, or that any consensus or agreement was reached on the appointment of the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army or the head of the General Intelligence Service.

This came in a statement he issued, a copy of which was received by the Libyan News Agency (LANA), in response to a statement issued earlier in the name of the Presidential Council. Al-Koni said he had followed the statement issued in the Council's name and found it to contain inaccuracies and contradictions of what actually transpired during the meeting.

Al-Koni said, "I would like to clarify that I participated in the meeting via electronic communication at 1:00 PM, after having been invited in advance. I was not absent, as has been reported, which makes what was stated in this regard untrue. Extensive discussions took place during the meeting regarding the appointment of the head of the General Intelligence Service and the Chief of Staff."

He added that despite the proposals put forward and the insistence on passing them, no agreement or consensus was reached on the proposed decisions.
