The Libyan delegation in Cairo honors outgoing Arab League leaders

Cairo, June 23, 2026 (LANA) – The Libyan Mission to the League of Arab States held a special ceremony honoring the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Assistant Secretary-General, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, on the occasion of the end of their terms in office. The ceremony was held in recognition of their efforts and contributions to supporting joint Arab action and strengthening the role of the Arab League over the past years.
The event was organized at the invitation of Ambassador Abdel-Muttalib Thabet, Libya's Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States and Acting Head of the Libyan Embassy in Cairo. It was attended by a number of ambassadors and heads of Arab diplomatic missions accredited to the League, as well as assistant secretaries-general, representatives of the Libyan and Egyptian Houses of Representatives, officials from the Libyan and Egyptian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and prominent political, diplomatic, cultural, media, artistic, and business figures.
In his address during the ceremony, Ambassador Thabet emphasized that the League of Arab States has witnessed significant and dedicated efforts, led by Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, which have contributed to strengthening the League's position and bolstering its role in addressing the issues and challenges facing the Arab region. He noted that these efforts have helped solidify the League's role as a unifying platform for dialogue, consultation, and coordination among Arab states.
He added that the Secretary-General has been committed to defending Arab causes in various regional and international forums and to working towards strengthening Arab solidarity and developing mechanisms for joint action in line with the political and economic changes taking place in the region and the world.
Ambassador Thabet also commended the important role played by Ambassador Hossam Zaki throughout his tenure at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, affirming that his extensive diplomatic experience and high professionalism have contributed to addressing numerous complex Arab issues and supporting the League's efforts in dealing with various regional and international matters with wisdom and efficiency.
He noted that this occasion is not merely a tribute to officials who have fulfilled their duties, but a celebration of a career marked by dedication, achievement, and commitment to serving Arab causes. It is also an expression of gratitude for their sincere efforts and responsible stances, which will remain appreciated and respected by all Arab states.
In a related context, Ambassador Abdel-Muttalib Thabet welcomed the selection of Nabil Fahmy to assume the duties of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressing his wishes for his success in leading the next phase and continuing efforts to develop joint Arab action and strengthen the League's role in serving the interests of the Arab peoples.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of commemorative shields and certificates of appreciation to Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Ambassador Hossam Zaki, amidst an atmosphere reflecting the high esteem and respect for their diplomatic careers and their contributions to joint Arab action over many years.
