AU and UN reaffirm cooperation to promote stability in the Great Lakes region.

Addis Ababa 10 June 2026 (Lana) The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening joint cooperation to support peace, security, stability, and sustainable development in the Great Lakes region.

This came during a meeting between the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and senior UN officials in Addis Ababa.

The meeting was attended by James Swan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Congo and Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the country (MONUSCO), along with Huang Xia, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region.

According to the AU’s official website, the meeting addressed the latest developments in eastern Congo and the security and political developments in the Great Lakes region, where the two sides exchanged views on the existing challenges and efforts to enhance regional stability.

Participants emphasized the importance of continued coordination between the AU and the UN to support initiatives aimed at achieving peace, consolidating security, and promoting sustainable development opportunities for the people of the region.
