New York, May 26, 2026 (LANA) – Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, discussed with FIFA President Gianni Infantino a proposal submitted by Libya to adopt “football diplomacy” as an official methodology and tool within the FIFA system. The proposal aims to foster closer ties between peoples and strengthen efforts to build global peace.

This came during Al-Sunni’s reception of the FIFA President at the Libyan Mission in New York, in response to Libya’s invitation to participate in the World Football Day celebrations (May 25), which Libya organized in cooperation with several other countries, in recognition of the pivotal role of sport in community development.

The meeting also addressed prospects for future cooperation between FIFA and the Libyan Football Federation, and ways to provide technical and logistical support to develop football in Libya and raise its level to meet national aspirations.

Ambassador Al-Sunni extended a formal invitation to Infantino to visit Libya as soon as possible to witness firsthand the efforts underway in the sports sector and assess the needs for developing sports infrastructure.

The two sides discussed mechanisms for utilizing football as an effective tool for development and stability building, emphasizing Libya's aspiration to unite international efforts in support of its initiative to transform the world's most popular sport into a bridge for diplomatic communication between nations and cultures.

For his part, Al-Sunni expressed his appreciation to Infantino for accepting the invitation, stressing the importance of the strategic partnership with FIFA in supporting Libyan aspirations to establish the values of peace and coexistence through sport.

It is worth noting that the United Nations General Assembly established World Football Day in 2024, following an initiative presented by Libya in conjunction with Tajikistan and Bahrain. This initiative received unprecedented international support from more than 170 countries, making May 25th of each year a global day to celebrate the world's most popular sport.
