New York, 25 May 2026 (Lana)—Libya reiterated its sovereign and steadfast commitment to nuclear disarmament and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), emphasizing its support for the right of states to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes in the areas of health, agriculture, and energy without any preconditions.
The remarks came in a statement delivered by Abdullah Al-Atwi, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations, during the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York.
On behalf of the Arab Group, which holds the presidency of the Group for the current month, Libya expressed the Group’s deep regret and condemnation of the Conference’s failure, for the third consecutive time, to reach a consensus on a final document, holding certain nuclear-weapon states responsible for reneging on their international obligations and for the absence of practical steps toward nuclear disarmament in accordance with Article VI of the Treaty.
The Libyan delegation reiterated the firm Arab position on the necessity of the immediate implementation of the 1995 resolution calling for the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction and for exerting international pressure to compel Israel to immediately accede to the Treaty and subject its nuclear facilities to comprehensive safeguards by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The Libyan delegation shared its disappointment over the absence of real actions and a timeline for nuclear disarmament as required by Article VI of the Treaty, emphasizing that Libya will keep leading efforts to support regional and global peace and security and to safeguard the national and developmental assets of the peoples.
