China Calls on ICC to Respect Libya's Judicial Sovereignty

Pulbished on:

New York, May 23, 2026 (LANA) – China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to conduct its work on Libya in an objective and impartial manner.

Speaking to a Security Council session on Libya on Friday, he said that China had reviewed the ICC's recent work regarding evidence gathering, investigation, and judicial proceedings. He urged the court to continue carrying out its mandate in full accordance with the facts and the law, and to ensure that all related proceedings are consistent with the fundamental principles of international criminal justice.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Sun added, "The court should continue to respect Libya's judicial sovereignty, strengthen communication and coordination with Libyan authorities, properly manage the relationship between international and domestic justice, and gain greater understanding and support from the Libyan people."

The Chinese Deputy Representative stressed the need for the international community to collectively engage with the relevant Libyan parties, encouraging them to address their differences through dialogue and consultation, participate in good faith in the UN-led mediation, and build consensus on holding national elections and unifying institutions. He noted that any action taken by the International Criminal Court should serve to strengthen internal Libyan unity, rather than deepen divisions and tensions.

Sun affirmed that China will work with all parties to strongly support Libya's efforts to safeguard its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He emphasized that China is committed to playing a constructive role in achieving national unity and lasting peace in Libya as soon as possible.
