Tripoli, May 21, 2026 (LANA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty and his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, affirmed the importance of intensifying joint coordination on the Libyan issue and pushing for a political solution with purely Libyan ownership and leadership, guaranteeing the unity, sovereignty, and stability of the Libyan state, while rejecting all foreign interference that hinders reaching a sustainable settlement to the crisis.
This came during a meeting between the two ministers on Thursday in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, where they discussed developments in Libya, as well as ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, and a number of regional issues of common interest.
According to a statement published on the official Facebook page of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers emphasized the importance of continuing the meetings of the foreign ministers of the Neighboring Countries Mechanism, considering it a key framework for consultation and coordination regarding the Libyan crisis. They also stressed the need to work towards creating the appropriate conditions for holding elections simultaneously, which would contribute to strengthening regional stability, given Libya's strategic importance as a direct neighbor of both Egypt and Algeria.
The official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tamim Khallaf, explained that the discussions also addressed ways to enhance bilateral relations between Cairo and Algiers. He noted that Minister Badr Abdel-Aty praised the strategic nature of the historical relations between the two brotherly countries and the continuous development in the level of political coordination and consultation between them.
Abdel-Aty affirmed his country's commitment to continuing to strengthen cooperation and coordination with Algeria at all levels, in order to support the convergence of visions and positions on bilateral, regional, and international issues of common interest.
