Pulbished on:

Tripoli, May 20, 2026 (LANA) – Libya, represented by the Minister of Health of the Government of National Unity, Mohamed Al-Ghouj, chaired the General Assembly of the World Health Assembly during its 79th session in Geneva. This marks a first for Libya within the World Health Organization, reflecting its growing presence and increasing international confidence in its role within international institutions and organizations.

The General Assembly is responsible for organizing the work of the World Health Assembly, adopting the agenda, and coordinating discussions and decisions related to the most pressing global health issues, with the participation of health ministers and representatives of member states.

This achievement coincides with Libya's election as Vice-President of the World Health Assembly, in addition to its chairmanship of the 64th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health, a move that underscores the effectiveness of Libya's presence within the regional and international health systems.

The session also saw Libya honored with a certificate of being free from trachoma, in recognition of national efforts to combat the disease, strengthen prevention and epidemiological surveillance programs, and meet internationally recognized standards for declaring a country free from this neglected tropical disease that causes blindness.

This participation underscored Libya's prominent position in international health affairs and its growing role in supporting joint health initiatives regionally and internationally.
