Cairo, May 18, 2026 (LANA) – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, affirmed that Libya looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Egypt in various political, economic, developmental, and cultural fields, noting that relations between the two countries are based on a shared history and deep-rooted ties between the two peoples.

In a speech before the Egyptian Parliament on Monday, Saleh said that the Libyan and Egyptian peoples were united in the past in their struggles against occupation, and later in their fight against terrorism, while the partnership continues today through development and reconstruction projects.

He pointed out that Libyan-Egyptian relations transcend the traditional framework of bilateral relations between states, given the extensive social, cultural, and familial ties that bind the two peoples, emphasizing that Libyans appreciate Egypt's supportive stances towards their country at various levels.

He added that Cairo has stood by Libya at numerous historical junctures, from supporting Libyan resistance fighters during the Italian colonial period to assisting Libya in confronting political, humanitarian, and terrorist crises in recent years.

Saleh praised Egypt's role in supporting Libya's unity and sovereignty, noting that Egypt contributed to pushing for a political settlement based on consensus among Libyans, in addition to supporting efforts to unify institutions and hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.

Saleh also addressed Egyptian support during the war on terrorist groups, commending Egypt's humanitarian stance following Cyclone Daniel's disaster that struck Derna in 2023. He pointed out that Egyptian rescue and aid teams were among the first to reach the city, including the deployment of the Mistral-class helicopter carrier to provide medical services to the injured.
