Tripoli 18 May 2026 (Lana) The UN congratulated the GNU-Ministry of Youth on the successful elections for local youth councils, affirming that this achievement reflects the growing awareness among Libyan youth of the importance of participating in decision-making and represents a significant step towards empowering youth and enhancing their presence in public affairs.
This came during a meeting held yesterday at the Ministry headquarters between the Minister of Youth, Haitham Al-Zahhaf, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya, Sophie Kemkhadze, in the presence of the Director of the Minister's Office and the Director of the Ministry's International Cooperation Office, where Kemkhadze commended the Ministry for its successful organization of the local youth council elections, considering this experience a significant milestone in supporting the democratic process for youth in Libya.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed prospects for strengthening joint cooperation on several issues related to youth work, most notably programs to refine and develop the capacities of local youth council members through implementing training initiatives aimed at developing leadership and administrative skills, which contribute to enhancing the efficiency of young people and enabling them to effectively play their roles within their communities.
The meeting also discussed supporting the efforts of local youth councils in advocating for youth issues and creating suitable spaces for young people to express their opinions and participate in proposing initiatives and visions that serve their issues and aspirations.
The meeting also talked about how to improve cooperation between the Ministry and the UNDP, following the Ministry's priorities and the main goals of the Libyan National Youth Strategy 2026-2035, with a shared commitment to supporting young people as important partners in development, stability, and building institutions in Libya.
