Dbeibah and Meloni discuss strategic partnership and strengthening cooperation in security and energy between Italy and Libya in Rome

Rome, May 7, 2026 (LANA) – Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah met today in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss prospects for a strategic partnership between the two countries.
The government stated on its official page that the meeting addressed the issue of Libyan prisoners serving sentences in Italy and the need to expedite the implementation of the memorandum for their transfer to complete their sentences in Libya, in accordance with established legal frameworks.
The meeting also covered strengthening cooperation within the quadripartite mechanism (Libya, Italy, Turkey, and Qatar) to combat irregular migration and support Libyan border and coastline monitoring capabilities. Dbeibah noted that Libya bears a significant burden on behalf of the region, necessitating an effective international partnership to share responsibilities. The meeting also discussed mechanisms for repatriation and voluntary return in coordination with relevant international organizations.
According to the page, the two sides emphasized, on the economic front, the importance of accelerating the implementation of gas projects and strategic cooperation in the energy sector to ensure stable supplies in the Mediterranean region. They also stressed the importance of building upon existing development understandings to support stability and development in both countries and the region as a whole.
