The World Health Organization praises Libya's freedom from trachoma

Tripoli, May 6, 2026 (LANA) – Libya received official congratulations from the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, praising the country's achievement of being free from trachoma. This occurred during a meeting between the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and a WHO delegation on Wednesday.

The WHO delegation included the Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhi, the Country Director, Ahmed Zouiten, and Senior Advisor Hisham Al-Bari. Also present were the Minister of Health, Mohamed Al-Ghouj, the Prime Minister's Financial Advisor, Mohamed Al-Shahoubi, and the Secretary-General of the Cabinet Office, Adel Dhuwair.

According to the government's official platform, the delegation presented a plaque to the Prime Minister in recognition of the WHO's earlier official declaration that Libya was free of trachoma, acknowledging the national efforts that contributed to this health achievement.

Libya also received official congratulations from WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who praised this achievement, emphasizing that it reflects the success of national programs in combating infectious eye diseases, strengthening the public health system, and developing primary care services, early diagnosis, and treatment.
