The UN mission holds an expanded meeting in Benghazi with members of the security track in the structured dialogue

Benghazi, May 5, 2026 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that members of the Security Working Group, established under the International Follow-up Committee on Libya within the Berlin Process, participated in an expanded session held today, Tuesday, in Benghazi with members of the Security Track of the Structured Dialogue.

During the session, chaired by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hanna Tetteh, and attended by the Security Track Coordination Team, participants reviewed the results of their work and their recommendations regarding securing elections, preventing conflicts, and security sector governance.

The members stressed that achieving Libyan national unity hinges primarily on unifying security and military institutions, in accordance with the principles of the rule of law and respect for human rights.

For their part, the members of the Security Working Group reaffirmed their continued international support for Libyan-led efforts facilitated by UNSMIL.

The session witnessed broad diplomatic participation, including ambassadors and representatives from Spain, Italy, Turkey, Russia, China, France, Egypt, the African Union, and the European Union.

Representatives from Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, the United States, Tunisia, the League of Arab States, Switzerland, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands also participated via videoconference.

According to the UN mission, the Secretary-General of the Libyan National Army attended the meeting, along with members of the Joint Military Commission (5+5) from the eastern region.

The members of the structured dialogue on the security track are scheduled to continue discussing ways to develop unified military and security institutions subject to the principles of accountability during the remainder of this week.
