Haftar and Orlando discuss supporting elections and fostering stability.

Benghazi, 5 May 2026 (Lana) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar discussed with the EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, in Benghazi, ways to support the political process, hold national elections, and enhance security cooperation in a way that contributes to consolidating stability and national unity.

“I was received by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi. In a warm and constructive exchange, we discussed the positive momentum in the political process and how the EU can contribute to support Hanna Tetteh’s efforts to advance national elections and foster unity,” Orlando said in a tweet.

“We reviewed a broad range of issues of mutual interest, with a focus on strengthening cooperation across key sectors, including joint efforts to address irregular migration, combat cross-border smuggling and organized crime, and enhance coordination in counter-terrorism,” he added.

He also stated that they discussed support for training programs aimed at strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of the armed forces, in line with international standards and respect for human rights, in addition to the LAAF’s role in promoting security and stability, as well as for its ongoing contributions to Libya’s reconstruction and development.
