The UNESCO office in Tripoli was inaugurated in the presence of Dbeibah to promote cooperation in education and culture

Tripoli, April 30, 2026 (LANA) – Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of the Government of National Unity attended the official opening ceremony of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Libya today, Thursday, at the Red Castle Theater in Tripoli. The ceremony, held under the theme “Celebrating Education, Culture and Science with UNESCO,” was attended by international and local figures, reflecting the strategic importance of international organizations resuming their operations within the country.
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Libyan National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, Dr. Mohamed Al-Qaryou, the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb and UNESCO Representative to Libya, Mohamed Sharaf, as well as a number of ministers, mayors, academics, intellectuals, media representatives, and representatives of educational institutions and international organizations.
In his address, Dbeibah emphasized that the opening of the UNESCO office in the heart of Tripoli is a crucial step reflecting Libya's restoration of its standing in international forums. He noted that this step underscores Libya's readiness for openness and partnership with the international community, stemming from the government's belief that investment in human capital and knowledge is the cornerstone of achieving comprehensive national development and sustainable stability.
For his part, the Minister of Education stressed the importance of activating the role of culture and science in supporting the development process. He affirmed the Ministry's commitment to expanding cooperation with UNESCO in the areas of scientific research, heritage preservation, and the exchange of educational expertise, in line with the organization's vision of building knowledge-based societies and achieving sustainable development.
The Director of the UNESCO Regional Office highlighted the deep historical ties between the two sides, given that Libya was among the first Arab countries to join the organization. He announced plans to sign a joint project entitled "Strengthening Infrastructure and Biotechnology" in cooperation with the General Authority for Scientific Research, aimed at supporting technical capabilities and developing the research environment in the country.
The ceremony included presentations showcasing the responsibilities of the Libyan National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and highlighting the most prominent joint programs linking Libya with the international organization.
