Libyan-European talks to enhance cooperation in heritage protection and local development.

Tripoli, 30 April 2026 (Lana)—EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, affirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Libya in protecting and promoting its extraordinary cultural and historical heritage as a source of significant economic opportunity.

This came in a tweet by him after a visit to Leptis Magna, where he reviewed the progress of the EU-funded "Heritage" program, implemented by Italy’s Agency for Development Cooperation, which is supporting the establishment of Libya’s first restoration school.

Orlando discussed with the Mayor of Khoms, Ali Al Deeb, ways to enhance cooperation in the areas of heritage protection and local development, where they agreed to continue building on their partnership to foster sustainable growth at the local level.

In the same context, Al-Khums Municipality participated in a celebration organized by the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb to mark the reopening of its headquarters in Tripoli, which was held at the archaeological site of Leptis Magna, was themed "Celebrating Education, Culture, and Science," and was attended by diplomatic missions and international organizations.

According to the official page of Al-Khums Municipality, the mayor received a delegation from the EU mission, where he stressed the importance of the city of Leptis Magna as a prominent historical destination that attracts visitors from all over the world due to its cultural heritage and unique location.
