New York, April 22, 2026 (LANA) – UN Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, warned that the economic situation in Libya is deteriorating, with unaccounted-for public spending, rising poverty, and a depreciating currency fueling public anger and exacerbating instability.

In her briefing to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, Tetteh said the mission looks forward to implementing the recommendations of the structured dialogue, calling for the implementation of the UN Panel of Experts' expectations and recommendations, including those related to monitoring the flow of oil revenues. She urged the Security Council to support Libya in these efforts.

The UN envoy welcomed the unified budget agreement signed by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State about two weeks ago, noting the erosion of the state's capacity for governance through unified institutions. She stressed the need for efficient management of oil revenues, enhanced transparency, and monitoring of the National Oil Corporation's allocations.

She added that the mission has been in contact with various political parties to discuss an agreement on a formula to break the deadlock, based on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee.
