Tripoli, April 21, 2026 (LANA) – Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of the Government of National Unity approved the National Water Security Strategy 2026–2050 on Tuesday. The strategy was prepared under the supervision of Minister of Planning Mohammed Al-Zaidani and Minister of Water Resources Hosni Oweidan.

In his address, Dbeibah emphasized that the adoption of this strategy represents a pivotal step in strengthening water security, which he described as a cornerstone of national security and a foundation for sustainable development. He stressed that the next phase requires a shift from crisis management to long-term strategic planning to ensure the protection and sustainability of water resources.

He explained that the strategy is a response to the growing challenges associated with water scarcity and climate change. Its aim is to establish a comprehensive national framework for managing the water sector more efficiently, improving resource utilization, developing institutional structures, and enhancing coordination among relevant stakeholders.

The strategy presents a vision for reforming and developing the water sector by supporting modern technological solutions, establishing governance principles, expanding reliance on scientific planning in resource management, promoting a culture of water conservation, and ensuring sustainability for future generations.

It also aims to direct investments in the water sector, strengthen partnerships with the private sector, and expand cooperation with international partners, thereby contributing to supporting water security as one of the most important pillars of stability and development in Libya.

The accreditation ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Salem al-Zadma, several government ministers, ambassadors accredited to Libya, representatives of international organizations, and experts and specialists in the water sector.
