HoR participates in the election of the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul.

Tripoli 21 April 2026 (Lana) The Libyan parliamentary delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), headed by First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Fawzi al-Nuwairi, participated in the election of the IPU Secretary General.

This came during the closing session of the 152nd Assembly and the 217th Governing Council meeting, held in Istanbul, Turkey.

The spokesperson for the HoR, Abdullah Blihaq, stated that the closing session included the presentation of the final document of discussions and the adoption of resolutions, in addition to the reports from the standing committees to the Assembly.

In this context, al-Nuwairi, in his capacity as Chairman of the IPU Standing Committee on UN Affairs, presented the committee's final report, highlighting its key discussions, particularly those related to the role of the UN Resident Coordinator and his team in strengthening cooperation with governments and parliaments.

The Assembly also discussed a proposed amendment to the UN Charter, submitted by a civil society coalition, entitled "Article 109: Renewing the UN Charter," as well as ways to empower the organization to address current challenges, and elected new members to the committee's bureau.

Regarding the work of the Governing Council, reports on human rights were presented, along with reports on the activities of other committees and bodies.

The Libyan parliamentary delegation included Sultana Al-Mismari and Dr. Rabia Abu Ras as members.
