Tripoli – April 17, 2026 (LANA) – Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Head of the Libyan Parliamentary Delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), presented a comprehensive briefing to the Steering Committee of the 152nd IPU Assembly. During the briefing, he reviewed the work of the UN Affairs Committee for 2026, focusing on human rights and the practical measures taken by the Committee in this regard.
This came during his participation, in his capacity as Acting Chair of the Standing Committee on UN Affairs, in the Steering Committee meeting held today, Thursday, as part of the Assembly's activities. The briefing addressed the most prominent efforts undertaken to support human rights issues and strengthen cooperation mechanisms with the United Nations.
Al-Nuwairi also presented the results of the survey prepared by the Committee and distributed to parliamentarians. The survey addresses financial aspects and mechanisms for supporting the United Nations and is scheduled for discussion during the Committee meeting on the sidelines of the Assembly.
He noted the visit of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today to observe its role in hosting refugees on Turkish soil, as part of the Committee's follow-up on relevant UN efforts.
The meeting included a presentation by the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on the Committee's role, along with briefings from the Chairs of the Standing Committees on the Assembly's work. Participants also discussed proposals related to the emergency item and reviewed arrangements for the general debate.
It is worth noting that the Assembly's Steering Committee is responsible for taking the necessary measures to ensure the smooth and efficient organization of its work.
