Tripoli, April 14, 2026 (LANA) – An expanded meeting was held in Benghazi to discuss the difficulties facing banking operations in southern Libya, primarily the shortage of cash, the low quality of banking services, and ways to improve the sector's performance to meet citizens' needs.
The meeting included the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, members of the Board of Directors, the Director of the bank's branch in Sebha, and the mayors of several southern municipalities.
The mayors reviewed the most significant challenges hindering banking operations in the region, emphasizing the need for practical solutions to alleviate the suffering of citizens and improve the level of banking services.
The meeting concluded with the formation of a joint committee comprising two members from the Central Bank of Libya and six members representing the mayors of southern municipalities, including the mayor of Jufra. This committee will be responsible for monitoring procedures related to letters of credit, automated withdrawals, and ensuring the availability of cash, as well as addressing staffing shortages through recruitment and the integration of new personnel into the banking sector in the region.
In a related development, the mayor of Jufra, Jama'a Mohand Al-Tuhami, stated that the installation of an ATM in the Al-Fuqaha area has been approved, along with expediting the procedures for opening a bank branch in the area. This will facilitate citizens' access to banking services as soon as possible.
