Tripoli, April 9, 2026 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reiterated its support for the proposals of the National Mediation Committee to resolve the judicial crisis in Libya.
This came during a meeting on Monday between the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, and the Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour.
According to a statement published on the Mission's official page, the meeting addressed an exchange of views on the current state of the judicial system and its impact on the unity of the justice system. The Attorney General also briefed Ms. Khoury on the latest developments in his ongoing mediation efforts aimed at addressing the institutional divisions within the judiciary.
The Mission stated that during the meeting, it reaffirmed its support for the proposals of the Libyan Mediation Committee and emphasized the importance of preserving the unity of the judiciary and ensuring that ongoing efforts contribute to strengthening the justice system in Libya, in accordance with the principles of the rule of law.
In a statement issued two days prior, the mission described the ongoing mediation efforts, undertaken by a committee comprised of leading Libyan judicial, legal, and parliamentary figures, as purely national endeavors enjoying complete independence. The mission emphasized that the committee's outputs and proposals are the product of its own work, developed through extensive consultations with relevant legal and judicial stakeholders.
The mission clarified that its role is limited to providing limited technical support, upon request, without participating in the committee's sessions or meetings with Libyan parties. It further stated that it considers the three proposals submitted by the committee last February to represent the minimum necessary to safeguard the independence, integrity, and unity of the judiciary. These proposals, the mission added, are a response to the requirements of the public interest and the need to advance Libya's transitional phase towards stability.
In closing, the mission urged all relevant authorities to engage swiftly and constructively with these proposals in good faith, in order to prevent further division within the judiciary and ensure its unity is restored, thereby strengthening the foundations of justice and the rule of law in the country.
