Tripoli, March 29, 2026 (LANA) – Political activist Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati, who had been detained since March 18, was released this evening, Sunday.
Activist Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati announced his release on his personal Facebook page, saying, "Praise be to God, I announce that I was released today at 4:30 PM Tripoli time. I am in good health, at peace, and in high spirits."
He added, "As I regain my freedom, I extend my sincere thanks and deep gratitude to everyone who stood by me during this ordeal, supporting and assisting me, especially my dear family and loyal friends, who were a steadfast and unwavering source of support."
In his post, he expressed his appreciation to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the United Nations Mission, the European Union Mission, and all Libyan national forces that issued statements of solidarity and contributed to upholding and strengthening justice.
He also expressed his gratitude to all bloggers, media outlets, and influential public opinion pages that presented a high and responsible model for advocacy campaigns—a model that the Libyan scene needs to support freedom of expression. And to preserve the dignity of his family.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the European Union Mission in Libya (EUMISS), and national human rights organizations had called for the immediate release of political activist Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati.
They considered this arrest and detention a violation of Libyan laws and Libya's international human rights obligations, asserting that this detention is not an isolated incident, but rather a common pattern prevalent among the country's security and law enforcement agencies.
