Tripoli, March 25, 2026 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called for the immediate release of political activist Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati, who was reportedly arbitrarily detained in Misrata on March 18 by the Internal Security Agency.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Mission said, “This arrest and detention appears to violate Libyan laws and Libya’s international human rights obligations. This detention is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a widespread pattern within the country’s security and law enforcement agencies.”
The statement added, “It is essential that Libya’s leaders and officials strengthen civic space so that all Libyans, including those who express dissenting views, can engage in debates and dialogues in safety and freedom of expression.”
The Mission concluded its statement by urging all Libyan authorities to end these arbitrary practices, release all those arbitrarily detained, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
