Benghazi, March 24, 2026 (LANA) – A report by a Swiss company specializing in air quality indicators for 2025 revealed high levels of pollution in several countries, with significant variations in the average concentration of fine particulate matter in the air.
According to Fares Fathi, Director of the Geographic Information Systems Department at the Libyan Ministry of Environment, Pakistan topped the list of the most polluted countries with an annual average of 159 micrograms per cubic meter, a level classified as unhealthy. Bangladesh and Tajikistan followed in second and third place, respectively.
Regarding Libya, the report showed that it ranked 25th globally with an annual average air quality index of 80 micrograms per cubic meter, a level considered moderate, but an increase compared to 2024, when the average concentration of fine particulate matter was 76 micrograms per cubic meter.
Fathi explained that this increase is mainly due to the impact of desert depressions and sandstorms, which are the primary source of air pollution in the country.
At the Arab level, Libya ranked eighth in terms of pollution, after Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
Fathi noted that Libya entered the global air quality and climate change rankings for the first time in 2023, after the operation of air quality monitoring stations. This contributed to providing accurate data that included the country on internationally recognized platforms for air quality indicators. He emphasized the importance of continuing to monitor pollution levels and taking appropriate measures to reduce their impact on public health.
