Tripoli, March 22, 2026 (LANA) – The Libyan Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, affiliated with the Coast Guard and Ports Security Authority, issued an official statement regarding its response to the Arctic Meta gas tanker incident.
The statement, published by the Ministry of Defense on its official page today, Sunday, reads: As part of the Libyan Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center's monitoring of the situation within its area of responsibility, the Center received a distress call (MAYDAY) on March 3, 2026, from the ice-bound gas tanker "Arctic Meta," located within Libyan territorial waters.
Based on instructions issued by the Ministry of Defense, the Center immediately initiated the management of the situation and activated emergency response procedures, in coordination with the Coast Guard and Ports Security Authority and relevant national and regional entities, in accordance with internationally recognized standards in the field of maritime search and rescue.
The Coast Guard and Ports Security Authority has deployed directly to the site of the incident, where it continues to monitor the tanker's movements through control channels. Simultaneously, it is working to keep nearby vessels out of its path and ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the vicinity.
The Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center is also coordinating with relevant national authorities to ensure comprehensive management of the situation and close monitoring of the tanker's status, while taking necessary precautions to address potential risks, particularly given the unstable weather conditions in the maritime area.
The Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center affirms its continued efforts to manage this incident in accordance with Libya's international obligations, ensuring the safety of lives at sea, protecting the marine environment, and maintaining the smooth flow of maritime traffic.
