Tripoli, March 19, 2026 (LANA) – Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher al-Sunni, discussed ways to support Libya's candidacy for a seat on the UN Security Council representing the African continent for the 2028-2029 term. This comes as part of early diplomatic efforts aimed at garnering support before the elections scheduled for June 2027.

This took place during a meeting between al-Sunni and the African Union's Ambassador to the United Nations, Mohamed Idris, in New York on Wednesday. The meeting reviewed the next steps, in accordance with the mechanisms adopted within the African Group, to ensure the necessary support for the Libyan candidacy.

According to a tweet by al-Sunni on his X account on Thursday, the meeting also addressed the work of the African Group within the United Nations, the most prominent challenges it faces, and ways to enhance coordination and joint cooperation to advance the African Union's agenda on the international stage.

Both sides stressed the importance of unifying African positions and working together to support issues of common interest, thereby enhancing the continent's presence within international decision-making institutions.
