Tripoli, March 16, 2026 (LANA) – The capital, Tripoli, and cities in the western region have been experiencing a strong low-pressure system since last night, causing heavy rainfall. This has led to flooding on some roads and water accumulation in low-lying areas and residential neighborhoods in the capital and other cities.
The heavy rainfall comes amidst warnings from the National Meteorological Center to citizens in the western region, particularly in Tripoli and its eastern areas, to remain indoors tonight and until tomorrow morning due to strong winds and torrential rain.
In this context, the Minister of Water Resources in the Government of National Unity, Hosni Oweidan, directed all emergency teams within the ministry and its affiliated agencies to be on high alert in anticipation of the expected weather fluctuations over the next 24 hours and the heavy rainfall in the north of the country.
The minister emphasized the need to intensify field monitoring of dams, track water levels and the condition of water bodies, and ensure the readiness of operating and drainage systems. He also stressed the importance of strengthening communication and coordination with relevant authorities to guarantee a rapid response and the implementation of necessary measures to protect citizens and property.
For its part, the Tripoli General Services Company continued its work in several city streets to pump out rainwater and clear blockages, aiming to minimize its impact on traffic flow, according to the government's platform.
The company announced it has raised its level of preparedness to address the ongoing weather fluctuations, with continuous monitoring of critical areas to ensure public safety and improve service levels in various neighborhoods.
Meanwhile, the Tripoli Security Directorate issued an urgent warning, urging citizens to exercise caution in the coming hours and to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary due to the expected heavy rainfall.
The Directorate warned drivers against driving on highways and the coastal road due to the impact of winds and high waves in coastal areas, emphasizing the need to adhere to safe speed limits and avoid roads with water accumulation.
It also appealed to residents living near wadis and low-lying areas to take necessary precautions when traveling at night to ensure their safety.
