Tripoli, March 9, 2026 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) stressed the importance of recognizing and protecting the rights of all women and girls on an equal basis.

This came in a statement issued by the Mission on its website on the occasion of International Women's Day, which is celebrated worldwide under the theme "Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls."

In its statement, the Mission said that the presence of Libyan women is essential for promoting peace, development, and progress, noting that the results of the recent municipal council elections demonstrated women's ability to lead at various levels of governance.

The Mission affirmed that the election of two women as mayors in Zliten and Suluq, in addition to three women winning seats outside the quota system, is evidence of the growing public confidence in women's ability to participate effectively in local governance.

It pointed out that the more opportunities women have to assume leadership positions, the greater the confidence in their leadership abilities will be, and the Libyan state should support women's leadership and highlight their achievements.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) warned against practices of intimidation and harassment, whether direct or through social media platforms, stressing that such violence constitutes a violation of rights and hinders women's empowerment.

The statement explained that practices aimed at undermining the authority of women holding public office, restricting their ability to perform their duties, subjecting them to intimidation and marginalization, and obstructing their participation in politics are inconsistent with fundamental human rights principles.

The Mission emphasized that Libyan women continue to face discriminatory practices and struggle to access resources that would help them achieve their aspirations, noting that such practices deprive the country of benefiting from their skills and capabilities.

The statement called for the removal of barriers that limit women's participation in political, economic, and civic life, through existing policies and legislation.
