Cairo, March 5, 2026 (LANA) – The Cairo-based magazine Rose El Youssef reported that a new round of Egyptian-Greek consultations on Libya was held yesterday, Wednesday, in Athens. The talks were chaired by Ambassador Bassel Salah, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director of the Libyan Department, and Ambassador Andreas Friganis, Director General for Political Affairs at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Greek Ambassador to Cairo and delegations from both countries also participated. The meeting addressed the evolving situation in Libya and ways to support efforts to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable settlement to the crisis.
The magazine explained that the two sides reviewed their assessments of the latest political and security developments and discussed ways to support the political process under the auspices of the United Nations. They emphasized the importance of supporting the Libyan-Libyan political process leading to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, which would fulfill the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and development and contribute to preserving Libya's unity and territorial integrity.
According to the magazine, both sides emphasized their rejection of any external interference that could fuel the conflict or undermine the settlement process. They stressed the necessity of the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions. They also affirmed the need to work with neighboring countries, in accordance with international law, to demarcate maritime borders in a transparent and equitable manner.
Furthermore, both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening regional and international coordination to contribute to the unification of Libyan institutions, particularly economic and security institutions, and to enhance the Libyan state's ability to extend its sovereignty over all its territory and combat terrorism, illegal immigration, and organized crime.
The magazine noted that, at the conclusion of the consultations, both sides agreed to continue close consultation and coordination in the coming period, both bilaterally and within regional and international forums. This reflects the depth of Egyptian-Greek relations and the two countries' commitment to supporting stability in Libya, which they consider a cornerstone for the stability of the entire Eastern Mediterranean region.
