UN and Libya Discuss Country's Health System

Tripoli, March 01, 2026 (LANA) – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya, Ulrika Richardson, met with the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Mohamed Al-Ghouj, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the UN and Libya in the health sector and accelerate progress towards achieving national health priorities.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Libya, Ahmed Zouiten, both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to improving the quality and accessibility of health services, ensuring that communities across the country, particularly the most vulnerable, have access to affordable and timely healthcare.

Discussions focused on practical steps to strengthen primary healthcare, improve emergency preparedness, and support the recovery and resilience of the health system. The WHO confirmed its continued technical support to the national health authorities.

The 100-day government health initiative was also discussed as a crucial opportunity to advance vital reforms, improve service delivery, and restore public trust in the health system.

Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening governance and accountability, along with enhanced coordination with the World Health Organization, other UN agencies, and local partners, to unify efforts and leverage technical expertise to address existing challenges and deliver more reliable, people-centered health services across Libya.
