Al-Sunni before the Security Council: It is time to correct the mistakes of the past and support the will of the Libyans.

New York, February 19, 2026 (LANA) – Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, affirmed that the time has come for the Security Council to correct its approach to the Libyan issue, either by providing genuine and positive support for the Libyan people’s will to regain control of their destiny, or by lifting its sanctions on Libya after fifteen years of placing it under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
This came in his address yesterday, Wednesday, to the UN Security Council during its session dedicated to discussing the latest developments in Libya, coinciding with the fifteenth anniversary of the February 17 Revolution.
Al-Sunni explained that Libya remains trapped in a vicious cycle in which foreign interventions and proxy wars have intensified, and initiatives and envoys have proliferated, while resources are plundered and assets are frozen under the pretext of sanctions, despite the fact that the Libyan people’s demand from the beginning has been freedom, change, and a dignified life.
Commenting on the briefing by the UN representative, Al-Sunni stressed the need to move from protracted consultations to clear and binding results within a specific timeframe, leading to practical and tangible solutions.
He emphasized the importance of including all active political leaders and forces without exclusion, thereby strengthening national ownership of the solution and ensuring genuine commitment from all parties.
He also stressed in his remarks that any political process, including the ongoing dialogue, must culminate in general elections according to a defined timetable, without reproducing transitional phases, and based on the Libyan Political Agreement, the outcomes of the Geneva process, and relevant Security Council resolutions.
Al-Sunni indicated that international support for the electoral process could begin immediately through the formation of joint national committees comprised of relevant institutions across the country, under UN supervision and with international support. These committees would handle the logistical and security aspects to guarantee the integrity and transparency of the elections.
The Permanent Representative of Libya to the Security Council explained that the success of the recent municipal elections serves as a practical model confirming the ability of Libyans to fulfill electoral obligations when the political will exists.
He also noted that popular demands for elections have reached a point where some legislative parties are showing flexibility regarding the mechanism for overseeing them. This strengthens the possibility of reaching an agreement on a constitutional basis or holding a referendum on the draft constitution, paving the way for the adoption of consensual electoral laws.
