Munich, February 16, 2026 (LANA) – Senior US Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, described his meeting with Saddam Haftar and the Commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, as “productive.” The meeting addressed strengthening the process of unifying the Libyan military and discussed preparations for the “Flintlock 2026” exercise, scheduled to take place in Sirte, with the participation of forces from both the east and west of the country.
In a tweet posted on Monday following the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference 2026, Boulos explained that the discussion focused on “the importance of the upcoming Flintlock exercise in Libya and other concrete steps to enhance the unification of the military between eastern and western Libya.”
The commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Anderson, announced last December that the Flintlock 2026 exercises would be held this year in Sirte, with the participation of military units from various regions of Libya.
In a televised statement last December, Anderson said that the Flintlock exercises "embody the United States' commitment to practical cooperation with Libya," and underscore his country's keenness to work with armed forces throughout the country and integrate them into a unified force. He reiterated the United States' commitment to supporting Libya's unity and stability, considering that the country has a real opportunity to become a regional model of stability if efforts toward unification and institution-building continue.
The AFRICOM commander indicated that progress toward a unified Libya is imperative, given its direct implications for developing the security system. He explained that security forms the foundation for stability, and stability, in turn, paves the way for economic investment and job creation, which is a fundamental element for the country's future.
Anderson stressed that unity and stability in Libya are essential for regional security, based on past successes in combating ISIS, and called on Libyans to continue working together to consolidate the foundations of stability, peace and prosperity.
