Jamila Al-Lawati takes the legal oath as mayor of Suluq municipality

Suluq – February 9, 2026 (LANA) – Jamila Salem Rahil Al-Lawati was sworn in as mayor of Suluq on Sunday evening, becoming the second woman to hold the position of mayor in Libya.
The election and swearing-in ceremony took place at the Ministry of Local Government headquarters of the House of Representatives-appointed government, in the presence of Minister of Local Government Sami Al-Dhawi and the ministry's undersecretary, following the completion of all necessary legal procedures.
With her election, Jamila Salem Rahil joins Al-Zaira Al-Fitouri Al-Maqtouf, who was elected mayor of Zaltan in 2024, in a move reflecting the growing participation of women in local leadership positions.
The Ministry of Local Government of the House of Representatives-appointed government affirmed that this measure comes within the framework of consolidating the principles of local governance and ensuring the stability of municipal operations, which contributes to improving the level of services provided to citizens and meeting their needs.
