Kufra, January 22, 2026 (LANA) – Abdullah Suleiman Hamed, the official spokesperson for the Kufra Municipal Council, announced the arrival of representatives from a specialized Turkish company, commissioned by the Development and Reconstruction Fund, to begin maintenance work on the Kufra Airport runways.

Following the announcement of the airport's closure for a month, Hamed explained that work has already begun on repairing the old 400-meter-long reserve runway, which had been hindering aircraft landings and damaging their landing gear. He indicated that this work would take one month to complete.

He added that the Development Fund had also commissioned a Turkish company to repair the main runway, which has been out of service since 1993. He noted that the company has already arrived and inspected the site, and work is expected to begin within three months.

He confirmed to LANA that flights will resume as soon as the reserve runway is completed within a month, while work on the main runway will continue concurrently, allowing Kufra Airport to operate at full capacity with two runways.
