The Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity is considering UNESCO's offer to provide technical support to Libya in the field of dam monitoring and maintenance.

Tripoli, January 22, 2026 (LANA) – The Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity discussed a project submitted by the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb countries, through the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, concerning a technical support initiative for Libya in the field of dam monitoring and maintenance.

The project, implemented for the benefit of the Ministry of Water Resources, aims to support Libya in the area of ​​dams. One of its key activities is conducting an assessment of the condition of several dams in preparation for their rehabilitation, which will contribute to mitigating the risks of floods and natural disasters.

The team assigned by the Ministry, along with the national expert contracted by UNESCO, and in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office, discussed several observations and comments regarding the project, particularly concerning the implementation plan, required procedures, equipment to be used, the work team, and the implementation timeline.

During the meeting, the national expert gave a presentation covering the project, its objectives, implementation methods, deliverables, and the proposed work plan, including the implementation timeline.

The meeting included remote participation from the Natural Resources Officer at the UNESCO Regional Office, the Head of the UNESCO Division at the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and the Head of the Eastern Water Region.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Ministry team's observations on the proposed technical support for dam assessment were recorded and will be discussed in detail at a future meeting.
