The Ports Authority issued a navigational warning about a cargo ship that broke down and was abandoned by its crew off the coast of Al-Khums, since last Saturday

Tripoli, January 20, 2026 (LANA) – The Ports and Maritime Transport Authority of the Ministry of Transportation in the Government of National Unity issued an urgent navigational warning yesterday, Monday, regarding a Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship that suffered a technical malfunction and was abandoned by its crew last Saturday east of the city of Al-Khums.

This warning was issued in a letter addressed by the Authority to the Naval Staff, the Coast Guard and Ports Security Authority, the Search and Rescue Coordination Center, companies operating commercial, oil, and free zone ports, ship owners and operators, the Chamber of Maritime Navigation, and the Chamber of Maritime Navigation (to circulate the warning to shipping agents and inform ship owners).

According to the warning titled "Abandoned Vessel - Caution is Necessary," a report was received concerning a cargo ship named "SIDER," IMO number (9367164), flying the Tanzanian flag, with a gross tonnage of (2941) tons, a length of (89.08) meters, and a beam of (14.4) meters. The ship experienced a technical malfunction and went out of control on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 9:00 PM. The crew abandoned the vessel, which is now considered abandoned. The crew was rescued. The latest location update indicates that the ship is in the maritime area northeast of Al-Khums, approximately (45) nautical miles from the Libyan coast, heading towards Malta, at coordinates 09.000 34 NAN.

The Ports and Maritime Transport Authority, including ports and oil platforms, expressed its hope that caution and vigilance will be exercised, and that all ports and offshore platforms will be fully prepared to deal with this vessel should it approach ports or offshore platforms. Coordination with the Ports Authority is also requested to ensure maritime safety and prevent any potential incidents.
