Tripoli, January 19, 2026 (LANA) – The municipality of Zuwara announced the commencement of rehabilitation work on the Old City after years of neglect, reopening its doors to residents and visitors and restoring it as one of the most prominent tourist attractions in the western region.

Shukri Abu Deeb, one of the leading volunteers, explained to the Libyan News Agency that the Old City's revival was made possible through the combined efforts and cooperation of Zuwara's residents. Previously, the city had been occupied illegally by undocumented migrants, leading to a rise in various forms of crime.

He added that a large-scale campaign, carried out in cooperation with relevant authorities and with the support of local residents, resulted in the removal of migrants of various African and Arab nationalities from the alleys and lanes of the Old City, whose landmarks had suffered damage due to neglect, vandalism, and mismanagement.

Abu Deeb noted the formation of several field teams tasked with carrying out comprehensive cleaning campaigns, along with the restoration and painting of houses and mosques, and the paving of a number of the city's streets, with the aim of revitalizing it as a tourist destination and preparing it to host cultural and artistic events.

He confirmed that work is currently underway to complete the necessary procedures for officially registering the old city of Zuwarah as a recognized tourist site with the tourism sector.
