Egyptian-Italian consultations on ways to resolve the Libyan crisis comprehensively and sustainably

Cairo, January 19, 2026 (LANA) – Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Bassel Salah held talks today with Maurizio Gratani, Director of Middle East Affairs at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, regarding developments in Libya and ways to support efforts to reach a comprehensive and sustainable settlement to the Libyan crisis.
According to a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks, held in Cairo, addressed ways to advance the political process under the auspices of the United Nations, enabling a Libyan-led solution that paves the way for presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, and guarantees the preservation of Libya's unity, sovereignty, and the integrity of its national institutions.
During the consultations, both sides emphasized the need to strengthen coordination among regional and international parties to unify positions in support of stability in Libya and to confront the challenges posed by the crisis to the countries of the region.
Both sides emphasized their rejection of any external interference that could fuel the conflict or undermine the settlement process, and stressed the necessity of the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libyan territory in accordance with relevant UN resolutions. They also affirmed the need to work with neighboring countries, in accordance with international law, to demarcate maritime borders in a transparent and equitable manner.
