Misrata, January 18, 2026 (LANA) – The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, received the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, and his accompanying delegation upon their arrival in the Misrata Free Zone on Sunday.
The government's media office reported that Dabaiba and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman held a meeting to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two brotherly countries and develop economic and investment partnerships to serve their common interests. They also discussed a number of issues of mutual concern.
According to the office, Dabaiba praised Qatar's supportive stance towards the Libyan people, emphasizing the importance of building upon the fraternal relations between the two countries and translating them into practical programs and projects in the fields of infrastructure, energy, and services.
He explained that the city of Misrata is witnessing today the signing of a strategic partnership to develop and expand the Misrata Free Zone port terminal, with investments reaching $2.7 billion. This partnership involves Qatari, Italian, and Swiss companies, most notably the Italian company MSC, and aims to increase the terminal's handling capacity to 4 million containers annually. He clarified that this partnership is being implemented through direct foreign investment financing, with clear development and operation arrangements. This ensures the project's completion without placing additional burdens on the state budget, reflecting the government's focus on attracting productive foreign investments to develop infrastructure and maximize returns.
He indicated that the project is expected to generate approximately $500 million in operating revenue annually, providing 8,400 direct job opportunities and around 62,000 indirect ones, thus enhancing Libya's competitive position in regional supply and trade chains.
According to the media office, the meeting addressed areas of cooperation in the oil sector, in addition to transportation projects, which contribute to raising the efficiency of services, improving infrastructure readiness, and supporting the national economy. Both sides emphasized their commitment to continuing coordination and strengthening avenues of joint cooperation in the coming phase, in a way that supports stability and development and serves the interests of the two brotherly nations.
