Tripoli, January 15, 2026 (LANA) – Presidential Council member Musa Al-Koni called on Council President Mohammed Al-Menfi to expedite the establishment of the High Commission for National Reconciliation, as stipulated in the political agreement, to ensure that reconciliation becomes a comprehensive national process, not tied to individual approaches or limited roles.
In a letter addressed to the Presidential Council President, Al-Koni stated that expediting the establishment of the Commission would strengthen trust among the various components of Libyan society and provide the Presidential Council with broad national legitimacy to manage this file, thus safeguarding the reconciliation process from any political interpretations or potential alignments.
He added that the nature of the reconciliation file, given its social and political complexities, necessitates that it be managed within a collective and participatory framework, and not reduced to individual interpretations or arrangements that do not reflect institutional consensus within the Council. It must be based on consensus among its members, as representatives of Libya's three regions, and in accordance with the spirit of partnership upon which the Council was founded.
The Presidential Council member emphasized that any advisory or supportive roles assigned in this context will have a greater positive impact when conducted within a clear institutional framework and under the supervision of the planned commission. This will ensure the integration of efforts and prevent any process or initiative from being burdened with dimensions that exceed the overarching national goal of reconciliation.
Al-Koni explained that the Libyan Political Agreement, which serves as the governing framework for the Presidential Council's work, explicitly stipulates the establishment of a High Commission for National Reconciliation. This commission is to be formed according to a balanced representation of Libya's three regions, reflecting the social and geographical diversity of the Libyan state.
Al-Koni concluded by saying, "I affirm that the success of national reconciliation is not measured by the speed of its implementation, but rather by its ability to accommodate diverse national sensitivities, enhance regional and international confidence, maintain internal stability, and ensure the support of the social base, all within a purely Libyan and stable framework."
