Tripoli, January 15, 2026 (LANA) – The Acting Minister of Health, Mohamed Al-Ghouj, approved the “National Policy for Midwifery and Nursing Services in Libya,” the first national document of its kind dedicated to regulating and developing the nursing and midwifery professions at the national level.

The Ministry of Health explained that this policy provides a comprehensive framework for strategic interventions related to nursing and midwifery, including implementation mechanisms and institutional frameworks supported by budgets. Its aim is to address shortcomings and enhance strengths through clear and specific implementation steps.

The Ministry also indicated that the document's development was based on in-depth analyses encompassing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges, guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on health and well-being.

The national policy aims to strengthen the leadership of the nursing and midwifery professions at the level of public policy, academic institutions, and clinical practice. It also seeks to reorganize the professions according to international standards, ensuring the provision of high-quality and efficient healthcare services at all levels of the health system.

For her part, the Director of the Nursing Department at the Ministry, Rima Ezz El-Din, considered the signing of the National Policy for Midwifery and Nursing Services in Libya as the first national framework of its kind, establishing a new phase in the development of the nursing and midwifery professions and strengthening their position as a fundamental pillar in achieving quality healthcare services.

She said: "This signing is not merely an administrative procedure, but a national commitment to empowering nurses and midwives, protecting the profession, and improving the quality of healthcare in Libya."
