Libyan-Greek parliamentary cooperation to support the issue of frozen Libyan funds abroad

Tripoli, January 14, 2026 (LANA) – The House of Representatives' Committee for Verifying and Monitoring Frozen Libyan Funds Abroad, chaired by Representative Yousef Al-Aqouri, held an official meeting yesterday, Tuesday, with Dimitris Kyridis, Chairman of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Greek Parliament, at the Greek Parliament in Athens, as part of efforts to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two friendly countries.

According to a statement by House of Representatives spokesperson Abdullah Blihaq, the meeting addressed ways to support Libyan initiatives related to the issue of frozen Libyan funds abroad and discussed developing mechanisms for monitoring them, in order to enhance transparency, adherence to relevant Security Council resolutions, and serve the interests of the Libyan state.

For his part, Kyridis welcomed the Libyan delegation, emphasizing Greece's commitment, as an active member of the United Nations and the European Union, to supporting all efforts that serve the Libyan people. He noted that he would convey the results of this meeting to the Greek Prime Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant authorities, reaffirming Greece's support for Libya's just and legitimate demands.

The Chairman of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Greek Parliament stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy as a direct channel of communication between peoples. He expressed his country's desire to develop bilateral relations with Libya and enhance cooperation in various fields, including energy, infrastructure, marine resources, and combating illegal immigration.

In a related context, the committee held a meeting with Ioannis Plakiotatis, First Deputy Speaker of the Greek Parliament. Both sides affirmed the deep historical ties between their countries and discussed ways to strengthen joint coordination in the coming period, as well as the role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing issues of common interest and supporting security and stability in the region.

The First Deputy Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Plakiotatis, stated that he would convey the Libyan position on the issue of frozen Libyan assets to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting support for the Libyan position in relevant forums, according to a statement by Blihaq.

It is worth noting that the Libyan delegation included, in addition to the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Youssef Al-Aqawi, and the head of the delegation, MP Ibrahim Al-Aqouri, MP Omar Tantoush, Chairman of the Planning, Finance, and General Budget Committee of the House of Representatives, and Ambassador Murad Hamima.
