The United Nations renews its support for Libya's efforts to combat organized crime.

Tripoli, January 13, 2026 (LANA) – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya and Resident Coordinator, Ulrika Richardson, reaffirmed the UN mission's commitment to continuing its support for national efforts aimed at combating organized crime, strengthening the rule of law, and building institutions capable of protecting security and stability in Libya.

This came during her opening remarks yesterday, Monday, in Tripoli, on the occasion of the launch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Middle East and North Africa (MENA) report, entitled "Dynamics of Drug Trafficking in Libya and North Africa," which was hosted by the Attorney General's Office.

Richardson emphasized that drug trafficking is not merely a traditional criminal activity, but rather a serious strategic threat that undermines the rule of law, finances illicit actors, and directly contributes to destabilizing peace, security, and stability, and weakening state authority in Libya and across the region.

She explained that the report is a direct response to repeated calls, including those from the UN Security Council, for comprehensive and evidence-based assessments of organized crime. She noted that analyzing drug trafficking as a major component of the criminal economy highlights the urgent need for a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between various illicit networks.

She added that the continued activity of these criminal networks contributes to the weakening of national institutions and undermines sovereignty, necessitating comprehensive and coordinated national and international responses based on the rule of law and that strengthen state capacities in both prevention and enforcement.

In closing, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General expressed her appreciation to the Attorney General's Office for its effective leadership and for hosting the event. She commended the level of partnership and cooperation with the UN system in Libya and affirmed the Mission's continued support for all efforts aimed at combating organized crime and consolidating security and stability.
