Egyptian Foreign Minister stresses the need for a comprehensive political settlement in Libya.

Tripoli, 11 January 2026 (Lana) Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Ati met with his Tunisian counterpart, Mohamed Al-Nafti, on the sidelines of the extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Egyptian Minister emphasized his country’s commitment to continue joint work with Tunisia to strengthen the level of bilateral relations between the two countries in various areas.
Regarding the regional developments, the meeting discussed a number of issues of common interest, including developments of the situation in Libya, where Minister Abdel-Ati stressed the importance of concerted regional and international efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement under purely Libyan ownership.
The Egyptian Minister stated that the desired settlement should lead to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, fulfilling the Libyan people's aspirations for stability and the establishment of legitimate and unified institutions, emphasizing the necessity of the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from Libyan territory.
Abdel-Ati affirmed that achieving these goals would contribute to supporting security and stability in Libya and the region as a whole, reiterating Egypt's full support for Libya's unity and territorial integrity and its rejection of any interference that infringes upon its national sovereignty.
The Egyptian Minister also stressed the importance of maintaining the regular meetings of the neighboring countries of the Libya mechanism, which includes Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, as it is a crucial framework for coordinating positions and exchanging views on supporting the Libyan political process, expressing his country's hope that the next meeting of the mechanism would be held as soon as possible.
