Benghazi, January 8, 2026 (LANA) – The Women and Children's Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, headed by Intisar Shnaib, warned that the recurring crimes of violence against children in recent times, whether physical, psychological, or any other form of abuse, constitute a real warning sign threatening the entire society, not just the child.
In a statement to the Libyan News Agency, Shnaib emphasized that "violence against children is a fully-fledged crime that cannot be justified under any social or cultural circumstances." She stressed that remaining silent about these crimes or treating them as "family matters" is tantamount to indirect participation in their perpetuation.
She stated that protecting children is a national, religious, moral, and legal responsibility. She confirmed that a specialized committee has been formed to draft a law against domestic violence, ensuring a clear legislative framework that criminalizes these practices, protects victims, and strengthens the state's role in prevention and intervention.
Shneib called for the activation of deterrent laws and the tightening of penalties for perpetrators of violence against children, along with the provision of safe reporting and protection mechanisms. She emphasized the importance of the integrated roles of legislative, executive, and security bodies, in addition to the active role of the media, educational, and religious institutions in breaking the silence, exposing violations, and raising awareness of children's rights.
She concluded by saying, "Children are not only the weakest link, but also a mirror of society's conscience. What is happening today requires serious attention before these crimes become a phenomenon that threatens social peace."
